Nordic News – Members Update

2020/21 Ski Season

We want you to know that we are doing all we can to come up with COVID-19 guidelines to be able to open our ski trails safely this season.  We are working with Nordiq Canada, Cross Country Ski Ontario and Algoma Public Health in order to make our opening this winter successful and safe. You may have noticed that Hiawatha Highlands has already started selling trail passes and the Early Early Bird pricing ends Wed Sept 30th.

We are confident that because cross country skiing is a “Naturally Distant” outdoor activity, we will all be able to safely ski throughout the season.  As soon as we finalize our COVID-19 Action Plan, we will publish it on our SFN website and pass it on to you.

Jackrabbit Registration

We are also working with all of our partners to determine how we can safely have a Jackrabbit program this winter.  Currently, we are working on logistics, and some things we are considering are staggered start times, shortened lessons, no snack time indoors, etc.  Please be patient with us as we try to navigate all of the regulations.

We are anticipating bringing 2020/21 Soo Finnish Nordic Youth Program Registration online to you in November.

Looking at this coming season and beyond, we are asking parents of children involved in the ski club to seriously consider helping out to ensure the sustainability of our programs.  We do require help with the administration of the Jackrabbit program now.  We are looking for individuals to assist with the following:

  • registration,
  • compiling class lists,
  • coordinating coach volunteers,
  • preparing communications to participants and their families, and
  • new this year – supporting adherence to COVID protocols

Please contact [email protected] if you can take on any of these duties.  Any contribution big or small would be much appreciated.

Thanks to our coaches who replied to our survey letting us know of their commitment and ideas to make this year work.  If you would like to coach and haven’t been in touch with us yet, please email [email protected].

Trail Trot

As you have probably guessed we will not be holding the Trail Trot this year.  Unfortunately, our past organizers felt there was too much uncertainty this month with kids going back to school and so much up in the air.  Hopefully we will be back next year with a better than ever Trail Trot 2021!!

Ski Swap

We currently have a committee of dedicated Ski Swap organizers who are committed to trying to ensure that we have a swap this year.  They are working on an action plan and we will be able to get back to you in a few weeks as to what the plan involves.  If you are interested in helping out with the Ski Swap organization this year please email Jen Nieson [email protected]

Virtual Awards Banquet

We had been holding out to be able to have an outdoor Annual Awards Banquet during the summer but the outdoor gathering numbers were never increased to what we would have needed to safely gather.  So now our little team of volunteers is trying to pull together a Virtual Awards Banquet that will hopefully be ready for you in October.  We will let you know when it will be ready to go live.

SFN Club Meeting

We encourage club members to send any items which you would like discussed during the club portion of the SFN Board meetings to the SFN secretary Don Nixon [email protected].  Our next SFN Board meeting is on Wednesday, October 7, 2020.
