High School Recreation Group – 3rd year pilot program

Soo Finnish Nordic is pleased to offer Year Three of a pilot program designed for teens.  High school students who want to learn how to ski, continue skiing for fun, or get extra time on skis with coaching support are encouraged to participate in our High School Recreation Group.  Fun, fitness, and friendship are the goals.  Practices will be relaxed and catered towards the different abilities of the skiers.

Who:  High school aged students (13-17 years old), any experience level welcome

When:  Saturday morning at 10:15-11:45, January 6 to February 24, 2024 (attend as many sessions as you can)

Where:  Hiawatha Highlands, trailhead may change each week and will be updated using the  TeamSnap app

What you need:

  • Classic or skate equipment (boots, poles, skis)*
  • Trail pass*
  • Clothing appropriate for the weather (e.g., base layers, warm layer, jacket, and pants {not jeans}, toque/headband, buff, mittens) Watch How to Dress for Cross Country Skiing for great tips!
  • Some skiers may benefit from bringing a drink belt (to carry water, snack, and hand warmers), but not necessary for participation
  • Attendance completed using TeamSnap (invitation will be sent prior to first session)

*If skiers do not have a trail pass or equipment, a discounted day pass and rental equipment may be organized for each session, first come first served. Please make arrangements with Hiawatha Highlands as the rental process does require liability waivers/signatures, proof of ID (guardian’s), and time for sizing.  It may take 15 minutes to get the equipment if the business is busy.  Special Trail Pass and Rental through Hiawatha Highlands @ $10 + HST  per session for each participant registered in this program. 

Overview of sessions:

  • Skiers will meet at 10:15 at the designated trailhead indicated on TeamSnap
  • Ski etiquette and some basic technique tips may be reviewed and demonstrated before and throughout the session.
  • The group will set off to complete a trail or sections of a trail. Expect to ski 3 to 6 km each session.
  • Be prepared for all types of weather conditions. Sessions are cancelled if the temperature is below -18C for the duration of the session (notice will be sent out in this circumstance).
  • Skiers may not be directly supervised at all times, but are required to follow the instructions of the coaches by checking-in at designated times and locations.
  • The group will end at the trailhead where they started, unless noted differently on TeamSnap.

  • Participants must have a Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club membership (two options)

Other Notes:

  • Weekly session information and attendance is completed on TeamSnap. Registered participants will receive an invite to the TeamSnap group.  This is a free app for mobile device or users can access information once logged-in to their account on a web browser.
  • Participants must not participate in a session if they are feeling unwell or injured.
  • Participants must agree to Rowan’s Law and the Informed Consent and Assumption of Risk Agreement as part of the registration process.
