Join the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club Board of Directors

Are you passionate about cross-country skiing, outdoor recreation and contributing to your community? 

The Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club (SFNSC) is seeking new Board Members to contribute to the Club’s next chapter. A new strategic plan is being developed and the Board of Directors will be responsible to drive forward strategies and actions to achieve the SFNSC’s bold vision. 

What does a Board Member do?

The SFNSC Board of Directors is a group of volunteers responsible for overseeing the governance and management of the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club and its business, Hiawatha Highlands. Board members are expected to attend a monthly board meeting held on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7pm. Attendance via Zoom is permissible. Board members are highly encouraged to join one of the many committees of the Board including Operations, High Performance, Facilities, Programs, Safe Sport and Race, where they can contribute their expertise in a more impactful manner.

What are the benefits of being a SFNSC Board Member?

As a member of the Board of Directors, you will be contributing directly to the growth and sustainability of SFNSC and Hiawatha Highlands. You will also become part of a welcoming and dedicated community of volunteers and passionate supporters of outdoor recreation in Sault Ste. Marie. It’s a great way to develop new friendships and contribute directly to the betterment of your community.

Do I need to be a cross-country skier to join the Board of Directors?

No. While cross-country skiing is at the heart of all we do, the purpose of the SFNSC and Hiawatha Highlands is to promote a lifetime of wellness. Interest in outdoor recreational activities, a passion for the wellbeing of your community and dedication to volunteerism are all that are required. The Board is particularly seeking new members with expertise in:

  • Legal
  • Marketing/Fundraising
  • Capital Projects
  • Finance

Do I need to be a member of the SFNSC to join the Board?

If you are not already a SFNSC member, you can still apply to the Board of Directors. If selected, you will need to purchase a membership. You will also need to complete the following: 

  • Safe Sport Training 
  • Understanding the Rule of Two training
  • Enhanced Police Information Check (E-PIC) 

About the SFNSC

The Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club promotes cross country skiing and other outdoor recreational activities in the city of Sault Ste. Marie by operating and maintaining a 50km trail system within the city limits. It also provides opportunities for all members of the community to learn to ski, and to continue to enjoy skiing as a life-long activity through its many programs; both competitive and recreational.

Board Member Selection Process

The Nominating Committee will review all applications received by May 31, 2026. You will be notified no later than June 2, 2026 if you are nominated for election. To be officially elected to the Board of Directors, you will need to attend the Annual General Meeting on June 3, 2026 at 6pm

There are three Board of Directors positions open. The role of Chair is also currently open.

The first meeting of the SFNSC Board of Directors is Wednesday, June 17 at 7pm.
