Due to forecasted cold temperatures, all youth programs and adult lessons scheduled for the morning of Saturday, January 24, are cancelled.
The hourly forecast for 10am from multiple weather sources is currently ranging between -25°C and -22°C. Based on these conditions, we feel it is safe to make this decision now, so that families have time to make alternative arrangements.
We do encourage families to get out on skis at another point during the weekend when temperatures are warmer.
Below are some helpful tips on how to manage colder temperatures and alternative activities from our Head Coach Declan:
- Dress in layers with a focus on keeping core temperature warm.
- Protect exposed skin – use buffs, toques (rather than headbands), balaclavas, warm mitts (rather than gloves). Some people like face tape or ointment like Dermatone.
- Keep sessions shorter and closer to the Kinsmen Centre, so it’s easy to head inside to warm up.
- Change into dry clothing as soon as possible after activity to prevent rapid heat loss.
- Fuel and hydrate well; staying energized helps your body maintain heat.
- Ski with a buddy and watch for signs of cold stress or frostnip, and stop early if anyone becomes uncomfortable.
While you are waiting for the temperature to warm up, Coach Declan recommends watching World Cup ski racing. Tomorrow is the classic sprint. It’s free to watch on YouTube’s FIS Cross Country channel and should be live around 11:30am. Reruns will also be posted there.
For our younger skiers, cold weather days are the perfect time to design the 2027 Jackrabbit Toque as part of the Nordiq Canada contest. More information is here.
- Designs must be original.
- The contest is open to skiers under 9 years old who are currently enrolled in a Bunnyrabbit or Jackrabbit program.
- Submit designs to Megan Dunn (mdunn@nordiqcanada.ca) by February 22, 2026.
- Nordiq Canada will select 10 finalist designs, followed by member voting starting February 25, with the winning design announced on Nordiq Canada’s website and Facebook page.
Stay warm everyone! See you on the trails soon.
